A little about me...
My name is Daryn Martin and I am the Visual Art Teacher at ACS since December of 2012. I graduated from ECU (Go Pirates!) with a degree in Art Education with a concentration in Metal Design. I received my National Board Certification in Early/Middle Childhood Art in 2006. When I am not teaching you will probably find me on some sideline cheering on my teenage son who plays football and lacrosse.
I am a strong advocate for the arts. Studies have shown that students that are exposed to the arts (visual, music, and dance), do better in school and score higher on tests. The arts help students develop their critical thinking, problem solving skills, and global awareness. In the days of 21st Century Skills, the art captures them all. It is my personal philosophy that learning cannot occur in isolation and my art curriculum is developed to integrate the core subjects (Math, Reading, Writing, Science, History) into my art lessons. On the most basic level this means when we study different cultures, we are learning about history. When we learn about 3-D shapes and perspective we are using Math. When we decode or analyze a piece of art, we are using reading skills. When we study color mixing, we are incorporating science. Art is more than just drawing something realistically. I try to help my students find parts of art they are good at and that they are interested in.
